The design of the Black Magic is very simple and understated. There’s not a single unnecessary flourish anywhere on the device. There’s not even a single logo or other branding. I love that so… so very much.
Even though the outside of the device is all hard plastic, it feels high quality. It has a soft touch finish that they call “Velvet Touch,” it feels smoother and less tacky than the silicone on the Tano by PicoBong but less so than the Lelo Ella or Picobong Ako. It doesn’t cause a lot of friction but you will need lube.
I loved the shape of the Black Magic, it mimics the feeling of anal beads. It’s really great for training your favorite orifice to open wide. This is definitely the best tool we’ve tried for anal training/warm-up. Vigorous penetration with this toys feels stellar.
The controls are easy to use.
Unlike many vibrators that claim to be waterproof, Black Magic is actually waterproof. The simple design – in my use – was 100% effective at keeping water out of the electronics. Make sure not to lose the washer, otherwise you’ll have a fried vibrator on your hands.
It only uses a single AA battery, which is awesome. I used the device a couple of times – maybe 3 hours total – and never ran down my rechargeable battery all the way and it was already half used.
While not nearly as strong as the Colt Prowler anal vibrator, it still was powerful enough to make a difference. In fact this level of intensity is probably preferable for most people. It strikes a good balance between being strong enough to feel and so strong it numbs your fingers. The placement of the vibe seems to be in the second or third bulb but it goes throughout the vibe.
Turn offs
There are two small seams on the device. This is the one major giveaway that it’s a value vibe.
It’s difficult to turn the control dial while it’s inserted. It takes too much force to move the dial and you often end up turning the whole device. It’s also a very large turn to turn the device on and a very short turn to roll from max to medium power. This is rather frustrating in use, I often had to turn the dial up several times as you can easily turn it one notch and dramatically change the power downward.
It doesn’t have any sort of flared base to prevent it from sliding in during anal play, which sucks because this could be a great plug.
It’s pretty damn loud but the sound is easily dampened by music.

The packaging is no great shakes and it doesn’t come with any instructions, warranty information or storage info. Then again, that probably shaved $5 off the retail price.
Bottom line
Doc Johnson’s Black Magic 7” Ribbed Vibe is not my favorite toy but it’s definitely far from horrible. The controls are the major flaw. If they revise this model with a better control scheme, I’d be more than happy to buy it. If you don’t mind the controls being wonky, this vibe is definitely worth a look.
